Get MFD & PMS Distributor Certification Without NISM Exam

If you are 50 or above, or have spent ten years working in the mutual funds business, you may no longer have to clear the NISM examination to get certified. This article explains who qualifies, what you need to do, and what has changed.

What Has Changed In The NISM Rules?

Until now, you had to pass an NISM exam to get certified as a distributor. Now, some people can skip the exam if they attend a short training course called the CPE programme instead.

This is possible for two certificates:

  • Mutual Fund Distributor (NISM Series V-A)
  • PMS Distributor (NISM Series XXI-A)

Not everyone qualifies. Eligibility depends on your age or years of experience, as explained in the next section.

Who Is Eligible?

You need to meet any one condition for the certification you want.

  • Mutual Fund Distributor (NISM Series V-A)

- 50 years or above on the CPE enrolment date.

OR

- 10+ years of experience in buying, selling or distributing mutual funds, as on the enrolment date.

  • PMS Distributor (NISM Series XXI-A)

- 50 years or above as on 7 September 2021.

OR

- 10+ years of relevant experience as on 7 September 2021, with current employment or engagement as a distributor of a SEBI-registered PMS.

How Can Other Finance Professionals Become Mutual Fund Distributors Without The NISM Exam?

Insurance agents, bankers, tax consultants and other finance professionals can become mutual fund distributors without the NISM Series V-A exam if they are 50 or above on the CPE enrolment date. The CPE route is not only for people already working in mutual funds. Professionals from related fields can add mutual fund distribution to what they already do, if they meet the age or experience condition.

Insurance Agents: You already have a client base, and you already know how to explain products and handle renewals and follow-ups. Adding mutual funds lets you offer investment solutions along with insurance.

Bankers and Retired Bank Staff: Years of dealing with savings, deposits and customer queries are a strong base. If you are 50 or above, you can become a mutual fund distributor after retirement without preparing for an exam.

Tax Consultants, Accountants and Financial Planners: Your clients often ask where to invest after filing returns or planning taxes. With a distributor certification, you can answer that directly. This also gives you a steady income stream beyond annual filing work.

Stock Brokers and Sub-Brokers: If you already deal in equities, mutual funds let you serve clients who prefer SIPs.

Important: The 10-year experience route counts experience in buying, selling or distributing mutual funds. Experience in insurance, banking or accounting alone does not meet that condition. For example, an insurance agent below 50 without 10 years of mutual fund experience would still need to pass the NISM Series V-A exam. Check your eligibility before you enrol.

Conclusion

The revised requirement gives eligible mutual fund distributors a simpler route to certification. Compare your age and experience with the table above and speak to your relationship manager before you enrol. A short check now can prevent a rejected application later.
